Winona State Take 3rd Place In District Playoff Tournament
(5.3.15) - The Swampdonkeys traveled to Sheboygan, WI this weekend to participate in the District playoff tournament. The boys began on Friday afternoon against national #4-ranked Minnesota State-Moorhead. A strong hitting performance from MSUM, and some early costly errors from WSU overwhelmed the Swamps and they dropped Game 1, 11-3. Saturday morning the boys took on DePaul in the loser's bracket still with a chance to play back in to the championship. A 12-hit effort carried WSU to a 19-3 victory, and they moved on to a matchup with national #14-ranked Grand Valley State. Brutal errors early on in the game did not help against the very offensively-strong GVSU lineup, and the boys fell behind early. A 3-run double by Tyler Kwiatkowski put some spark back into the boys in the 4th, with a score of 8-5 GVSU. The WSU defense was able to hold steady for the rest of the game, only allowing one more run in 3 innings. However, that one run proved to be the difference-maker, as the Swamps' late rally fell short. WSU dropped Game 3 with a score of 9-8 and was eliminated from the tourney, ending the 2014-2015 season.
Despite an early exit from the District tournament, WSU Club Baseball ended with a lot to be proud of in the program's most successful year in it's history. The Swamps finish with an 18-8 record overall, completing more than 20 games in a season for the first time ever. We traveled to Tampa, FL for the NCBA Spring Showcase for the first time ever. We won the program's first ever conference title and earned our first ever playoff berth. Jon Bishop led the nation in HRs with 6 on the year, Matt Navis finished T-6th in the nation in Ks thrown, Cody Kreiner finished 8th in Ks thrown. Thank you to our 8 leaving seniors for their years of time and dedication put into this program and helping create the foundation that has brought us to this point. We hope to make you boys proud next year and claim our spot in the World Series.
